John J. Siegfried

John J. Siegfried is Professor of Economics at Vanderbilt University and Secretary-Treasurer (chief administrative officer) of the American Economic Association. He received his B.S. in economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1967, his M.A. in economics from Pennsylvania State University in 1969, and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1972. Professor Siegfried has taught on the faculty at Vanderbilt since 1972.

Professor Siegfried's areas of expertise include antitrust economics, industrial organization, and the economics of sports. Since 1976, Professor Siegfried has been a consultant on about 30 antitrust cases and a half dozen cases involving other issues. He has served as an expert witness in cases involving mergers, predation, horizontal and vertical restraints, and price discrimination. Professor Siegfried's long list of publications includes an article on the challenging objective of "Keeping Economics from Becoming a Sexy Social Science."

Professor Siegfried is currently on the Board of Directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research and the National Council on Economic Education. He was President of the Midwest Economics Association in 2001 and the Southern Economics Association in 1996. He served on the senior staff of the President's Council of Economic Advisers and as a senior staff economist with the Federal Trade Commission.
