University of FloridaDavid E. M. Sappington is the Lanzilotti-McKethan Eminent Scholar in the Department of Economics and the Director of the Public Policy Research Center at the University of Florida. From 2001 to 2002, Professor Sappington was the Chief Economist for the Federal Communications Commission. He received his B.A. from Haverford College in 1976 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1980. He has been a member of the Economics Research Group of Bell Communications Research, and has taught at Princeton University and the Universities of Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Professor Sappington's research focuses on the economics of regulation (viewed especially through principal-agent analysis), and the role of incentives in eliciting desired conduct under imperfect information. He has received grants to conduct research in health economics and has consulted for a number of clients in telecommunications policy and design. Professor Sappington has presented expert advice and testimony on telecommunications mergers, incentive (including price cap) regulations, and postal industry pricing.
Professor Sappington is an associate editor for The Rand Journal of Economics and The Journal of Regulatory Economics. He is also co-editor of the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy and is on the Board of Editors for Information Economics and Policy and Economics Letters.
